Great news !

If you are not already registered to try to claim a prize, which may or may not exist, you're too late. Registration deadline has passed.

So, back to the Spirit of Open Source.

Who wants a firmware image so they can play with their new Ubiquiti Router Station ?

Not much s finished yet, but as you might see, it's easy to get the rest done - hey ! you might even be able to do it yourself !

Learn about shell scripts.

Basically it is a totally modular GUI for *any* hardware that can run the most excellent OpenWRT.

Every single bit is modular.

You get a GUI that can be customised (in case you want pretty).

It can do anything that you could do thru a shell, by typing.

YOU can make modules, so if you want bespoke, you got it, and the modules are easy to make.

Firmware image is here :-

http://www.vxwifi.co.uk/vx-modules/openwrt-ar71xx-ubnt-rs-squashfs.bin

Once you flash your RS you'll have to get it on the internet.

Eth0 Default IP is 192.168.100.2 and it's looking for a gateway at 192.168.100.201, but you can change that easily enough.

Eth1 has a dhcp client running.

Once it's flashed and booted, point your browser at 192.168.100.2

None of it is quite finished, but you'll get the idea.
Start with the *only* menu option !

Did anyone submit an entry into the competition?

I am waiting for a webgui that can control the routing, bridge ports and control mini-pci wifi cards to make access points or clients - I am dyslexic so pretty helps - black screens of text make it hard to learn and just confuse me. Thats why I have stayed away from anything involving openwrt so far

I would currently use a nanostation and a bullet with crossover cable to make a bridge which I would rather do on a routerstation.

Any chance to see the sources? I'm not in the competition, but maybe I can help with bugs, etc.

BTW, did you build your GUI on top of Luci?

Thanks

Nope. I did it from scratch.

I've used shell scripts. Not the fastest thing in the world, but once you've configured it, your router should be out there working for you as fast as possible.

A slightly slower-than-possible GUI i can live with, because i see it just a few times. I wish Microsft had the same idea !

My philosophy is that if it works, and you set it up right, then it is working, unless the hardware is broken.

Lots of info about why a router or system *isn't* working is only helpful if, er, it isn't working, which is precisely what i don't want.

'course lots of non-working info helps you find out where you made a mistake, but I *much* prefer the figures that tell me that it *is* working.

Sources are all OpenWRT standard, and my config GUI is just a pile of shell scripts, all conforming to a standard(ish) that i'm making.

All of the real hard work has aready been done.

It'd be saner for Ubiquiti to donate a shed load of cash to the OpenWRT guys rather than chuck it at a script kiddie like me - which is one reason that i entered, then the next day i ejected from the Competition.

As soon as i get the basics working (~a week) then you can have a free GUI for the brilliant RouterStation board. The really clever stuff, like Load Balancing, true Prio Traffic condtioning etc will be pay-a-little-for.

I'm not just a script kiddie, but despite how fantastic my skills may be, the OpenWRT guys and the work they do is simply *amazing*, and they deserve their full credit, and revenue.

Dunno what this might do to the Competition, but hey - i bought 10 RS boards, and want to deploy them, and I just can't hang around waiting for some (maybe free) firmware that (maybe) will do what i want.

Well, if you want to post a tar file of your scripts for the GUI with some instructions on how to build them for OpenWRT, maybe I can help to make them better.

My problem with Luci, is that it's ridiculously slow on Firefox ( have not tested it on other browsers). I'm tired of having my computer (Dual Quad) hang every time I open my router GUI.

Yes, I can do it all with command-line, but for the more complex packages, it's faster with a GUI.

Thanks
