hello,

is it planned to support ubiquity products on machines that run osx?

it would be of great use to have drivers for the super range xpress card on mac book pro computers.

regards,

frank

Hello Frank,

You can try this driver:

http://www.orangeware.com/endusers/wirelessformac.html

This is supported for our SRC but im not sure if it has PCI-E support. No one has tried it yet so would be a good test.

But at this time we do not plan to support OSX.

Thanks,

Mike

Contrary to what I was told by Ubiquiti Networks, the SRX ExpressCard works in OS X. I have posted detailed instructions on this page (see the 'Drivers Atheros' section):
http://www.seattlewireless.net/MacOS

I am using it in Leopard 10.5.1, but I am curious if people get it to work under Tiger 10.4 as well.

I contacted Orangeware and they responded that they have no intention of supporting this card or Intel Macs in general at this time.

Unfortunately this approach does not seem to work for 10.5.3 or later releases of MacOS Leopard. No idea why .... but there doesn't seem to be anyone out there who has come up with a workaround at the present time.

Ubiquiti claims OSX support on the SRX product page. I bought the card on the basis of that information, but as that information seems to be misleading, I recommend the statement about Mac OS X be removed from the SRX product page.

At one time, I got the SRX card to work with OS X. But as I explained in the following link, OS X 10.5.3 and later no longer enables the hack to work. I need someone else to take a look at the problem because I don't have time.

When will Ubiquiti Networks motivate to support the SRX card in OS X?

I never saw a mention of OS X on their product page. I think you must have been looking at a different model of card.

Thanks for the follow-up. Glad to see you're still around ;-)

At the URL above, do you see:

"Compatible with latest laptop computers including Apple/OSX."

As far as I can tell, the is the main SRX product page, and it does explicitly claim support for OS X.

Wow, I totally overlooked that statement. My mistake.

Ubiquiti, the ball is in your court. Will you support this card in OS X? The product page is misleading customers to buy the card for their Macs.

Uqibuiti's tech support did engage me enough to assure me it would work and that the instructions could be found with a little research, so I went ahead with the purchase. I'm sure they're busy and I am but one needy customer so I'm happy to cut them a break, but I would hope they might decided to clarify their position on Mac OS support, either on the SRX product page or here in this forum.

But here's the good news .... I had a bit of a caffeine-fueled breakthrough last night. I made a local working copy of the stock IO80211Family.kext that's included in fully updated 10.5.6, I used DPCIManager to find out the PCI IDs of my SRX then I edited the Info.plist file of AirPortAtheros.kext, removed the PCI ID of my Mac's built-in Atheros card and replaced it with the one from my SRX card.

I used "Kext Helper b7" to install my hacked kext, then I rebooted.

IT WORKED! I'm up and running on my SRX. The built-in airport card is disabled, and if I accidentally unplug the SRX I have no choice but to reboot the mac in order to get it back, but at least it's working for me?

One question - is it possible to have more than one Airport card and run them concurrently? I'm going to try adding the PCI id of the factory-installed one back into the driver but I don't know what to expect. Does MacOS even consider the possibility that there might be more than one airport card? Does the GUI even have a way to allow one to configure such a scenario?

I'm no longer happy to cut them a break. They gave me assurances it would work on Mac OS and they they didn't give me a single helpful pointer after that time. The replies they gave me were one-liners that someone would do on their lunch break, that equated to 'let me get back to you that', and 'do a google search on 'srx mac os x driver' etc. They kept assuring me it was possible, but I spent 3 solid days on it and I know what the state of the art was before I dug into it - it was not possible.

The information Ubiquiti has posted on their website regarding the SRX and its support on Mac OS X is misleading, and incorrect. Mac OS X is NOT a supported platform, and they will NOT be able to help you with it. Please do not support these kind of business practices by purchasing this manufacturers product.

Here's the professional kind of treatment you can expect from "Mike Ford" the only customer-facing interface Ubiquiti seems to have:

"I do apologize that you feel this way. However I cannot support MAC OSx directly. There are guru's out there who have gotten it to work succefully, but I was unaware of any change in the MAC OSX that would have prevented this chipset from working. The procedure to use MAC's interal wireless driver has been around since the inception of the car and does work with MAC OSX."

In 5 days of email he could not provide me with one example of this procedure that has been around since the inception of the car. He told me I needed to edit some value in the registry one day ... would get back to me with the details but never did. Registry?

UBIQUITI, TAKE THE MAC OS X SUPPORT OFF THE SRX PRODUCT PAGE.

Hello Darren,

I do apolgoize yet again, but we do not provide direct support for OSX. I did go out of my way to try and get you up and running, but do not have a lot of time to spend on non-supported issues. We do not test on MAC OSX nor plan to. We rely on our user's to provide us information on what works and what does not work on unsupported platforms. I try very hard to provide the best support to everyone that I can, as evident by this forum. However, in all fairness it will be update to show that it only works with the specific version of MAC OSX until a user in the community shows otherwise.

Thank you,

Mike

Significantly improve wireless range and performance. Compatible with latest laptop computers including Apple/OSX.
To me...that means the card can be physically inserted into any laptop with a compatible card slot, i.e. the latest Express card form factor.

Where do you see that UBNT has Mac drivers????

You bought a Mac...its your baby to burp.

Thanks to dazza321, I have gotten my SRX card up and running in 10.5.6.

I have updated the support page that I put up on the subject with the new solution: http://www.seattlewireless.net/SuperRange

Thanks so much for this obscure hackery.

Ubiquiti Networks, it would be in your best interest to support OS X with proper drivers given that its a huge market. The days of a Mac user as second class citizen are long over.

Hy guys
Is this card 'Ubiquiti SRX 300mW' compatible with the ExpressCard/34 slot of the new MacBook Unibody?
The models in the shop also lists
32-bit Cardbus Type II
I'm interested to know if they are compatible as well..
thanks a lot

I would say don't waste your time buying this card. Even with the hack that I posted, the card does not work reliably enough in OS X. If you are running a different OS on your unibody MacBook Pro (Windows, Linux), then go ahead.
