View Full Version : Problem with read/unread forum marks.
Hey, I'm a new user here but all forums are marked as red and there is no new forum messages? What's the problem, it seems that forum software is kinda very old/buggy.
Regards
Try hitting F5 to refresh your browser.
I did this already, and also shift + Reload - nothing helped, I see only some newer post as yellow mark, but for example this message, even after your answer didn't turn yellow...
By the way, look at the footer: http://ubnt.com/forum/templates/ubnt/images/bbfooter.gif to see how old is this phpBB version...
By the way, look at the footer: http://ubnt.com/forum/templates/ubnt/images/bbfooter.gif to see how old is this phpBB version...I'd say that was a testament to its reliability and popularity. If it works, don't change it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhpBB

I'd be likely to say it was something on your end.
And now what? Logged in today and saw many unread posts. Got reading one of them, and after that again - there is no unread posts. "View posts since last visit" shows no messages. BTW my colleagues already complained many times about that issue - it is really annoying.
One more thing about phpBB stability - last week I saw their main site down for maintenance, because their site got hacked due to some vulnerability... Sorry, but I don't have much sentiments to ancient software which potentially has tons of known bugs and vulnerabilities which already fixed in new versions.
I only have that problem perhaps twice a month, but you are having it far more many times. Considering how often I visit this forum (perhaps fifty times a day), I really have to think the problem is at your end.

Did you notice they said the attack was BEFORE they applied any patches? And that "It is important to stress that no vulnerabilities have been found in the phpBB software itself"

I see that you agree that such problem exist. And now I've got your point. Fifty times a day - that not much too loose when such problem happens, but imagine how much posts you will miss if you are reading forum not so often - say every 2-nd day or rarely.
Today getting same problem again. It's really annoying. I'm starting suspect that it is somewhat related with reading forum from multiple locations. But anyway, this is totally unacceptable and should be fixed.
You are the only one that appears to be having a problem. There is nothing to be fixed, except at your end.
As for *MY* experiencing it, I remembered that it was because I had the forum open in two different tabs and didn't realize it. Therefore, I would not "agree that such problem exits".
Participating in many phpBB forums, using lots of tabs and different browser windows and never seen such problem. Only this ubnt forum with ANCIENT phpBB version has such problem. BTW - I have information that ubnt staff also suffers from that problem - that's why they are missing many posts which really needs their attention.
This is happening every day - today opened new window for this forum, there was lots of unread forums. Started reading first one and then returned to Index - all forums read - no new messages. Used only single window, no multiple tabs and so on. Using latest greatest Firefox v3.0.6. Maybe someone from ubnt can tell something about this problem? Is there any official opinion for this issue or ubnt does't care about it ?

Did you notice they said the attack was BEFORE they applied any patches? And that "It is important to stress that no vulnerabilities have been found in the phpBB software itself" Have you red their official announcement:
As you may already be aware from the message on phpBB.com or the topic in the #phpBB channel on Freenode, we have recently been attacked via a vulnerability in an outdated PHPList installation. The initial attack was performed well before a new version of the software was released or a patch provided. It is important to stress that no vulnerabilities have been found in the phpBB software itself.
We took area51.phpBB.com down along with phpBB.com to ensure integrity and prevent further damage. While we actively work to bring phpBB.com back online, we would also like to inform you of the damage that has been done.
The attacker gained entry through the PHPList application and was able to dump a complete backup of the emails on file. He then used the same exploit to access the phpBB.com database. Both the email list from PHPlist and a copy of the phpBB.com users table were then posted publicly.
phpBB3 uses a complex hashing algorithm in order to prevent someone from determining the plaintext value of a password. phpBB2, however, used a much simpler and less secure md5 algorithm to store passwords. This is one of the many reasons why we have decided to no longer support the phpBB2 software. Because hashes cannot be reversed, phpBB3 is set to convert phpBB2 hashes to the new phpBB3 standard during the first user login. Those users who registered while phpBB.com used phpBB2 and did not login on the new phpBB3 board continue to have their password hashes stored in the old format. Passwords stored in the old format are much less secure than those stored in the new format. The attackers have been focusing purely on the passwords stored in the old format.
If the password to your phpBB.com account is used anywhere else (especially with the same username), we strongly recommend that you change it. Using the same password across multiple sites is not security wise and should not be done under any circumstance. Additionally, you should change your password on phpBB.com, when it becomes available.
We apologise for not securing our servers in time to prevent this from happening. This demonstrates how critically important it is to always make sure that you keep up to date with any software that is running on your machine. Intrusion is possible even before a patch is provided to fix a vulnerability. At this time, the team is working around the clock to restore phpBB.com and other resources.

So you are still claiming that old phpBB is secure and bug-free???
And one more thing to consider about, php version is Version 5.2.1 08-Feb-2007
As you can see - it is 2 years old - so it contains all 2 years old bugs and vulnerabilities.
Feeling more comfortable now?
I'm very comfortable using it, *I* have not had any problems and no one else (AFAIK) has mentioned any problems.
