I would like to be able to use serial to connect to my new router station board. Could you recommend what I need to do that. I've been reading about a transceiver chip, and am looking for something that I can just solder and go and not have to breadboard up.

Thanks

This might help

I will suggest the MAX235 as it doesn't require external caps and such. Just plug and play.

Here is the pinouts for the I/O headers.

First thanks for your replies.

So that I speaking the correct language and terminology is what I'm looking for called an RS232 to TTL Converter?

I'm looking for something like this correct?

http://alldav.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=11

Can folks recommend a couple of different sources for electronic parts and assemblies.

Thanks again.

You are correct. TTL has a swing of 0-3.3V while the rs232 coming from a PC is looking for +-12V swing (sometimes as low as +-7V though). The link you showed seems to be what you want.

For thoses outside USA, this (http://cgi.ebay.com/RS232-Serial-Port-To-TTL-Converter-Module-MAX3232-V-1-0_W0QQitemZ230322834633QQihZ013QQcategoryZ92078QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262) can be another source...

BTW, Allan now Sells Internationally!

I also posted some recommendations in the guide: http://wiki.ubnt.com/wiki/index.php/RouterStation_OpenWRT_SW_Setup_Guide

I've used a half a dozen different solutions, but I like my latest find the best. See the TTL-232R-3V3 comments in the setup guide.

Can anybody explain how to use the alldav adapter?

I have tried virtually every configuration (wiring and software) and all I get is garbled text over the serial link...

I use the exact same software / hardware with other boards without any issues.

Garbled text usually means you have the wrong comm parameters.

I *think* it is 9600, 8,n,1 but that's going from memory.

Start with 8,n,1 and then try different data rate settings.

[Edited - look at Mike's post above]

[Edited again - Mike posted it here: http://forum.ubnt.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6444]

Hello Dan,

The rate is 9600 8/N/1 but you need a RS232 transceiver chip to get the information correctly.

Thanks,

Mike
