View Full Version : Passive multiport poe injector?

I am looking forward to simplifying my transmitter sites by replacing old hardware with Bullet2 units, but I hate the mess of multiple poe injectors and multiple power adaptors. I am looking for a tidy little passive 8 port injector or 8 port switch with passive poe. Has anyone else ran across anything like this? All the switches I find are 802.3af which won't work. There has to be something out there...

We have a 24 volt power supply that feeds a modified pin-out patch panel.

I thought about that too. Have any schematics or photos you would like to post? I would wonder if CAT5 cable is enough to carry the load across multiple jacks? I think that there is room for a product along these lines. Something that has PoE with surge/lightning prevention. Someone can have that for free... just send me about 8 prototypes :-D

Thanks!

I terminated the power pairs on each jack with its own CAT5 pairs back to the power supply buss. Sounds like you are thinking of chaining from one jack to the next.

I've built this sort of thing with a patch panel, keystone jacks, and switching power supply too. I've got one powering trango gear, another for mikrotik gear.

Two rows of keystone jacks, transmit and receive wiring goes from bottom row jack to top row jack.

Power cat5 lines go back to the power supply. Power supply bolts onto the back of the panel where you don't need keystone jacks all the way across.

If you don't have many ubnts, you can get the big power supply and a handful of the circular power connectors and continue to use the ubnt injectors. I've done this for small cabinets where we power 3 or so nanos and didn't want a massive power strip and wallwarts, etc...

hello, I was looking for something like this multi injector port to construct it myself. That was 2 years ago from your post but anyway did you find a solution? if yes please send some schematics and or photos or links to make one for my needs (at least 12 port rackable injector compatible with comercial devices having POE capability).
If my question answered please send direct to my email.
thanks a lot

I have a ton of those original POE injectors supplied with PS2's. I have been opening them up and just jumping the power. I've done this to split the original cable run into 3 POE ports and used a RB450 as a bridge. Nice thing is this all fits into those cheap pack wireless boxes that I also have a ton of laying around. I use a 24V 2A POE injector on the other end.

This is also very useful for LAN repeating, once in a while we have a client that puts a pole on the other side of the trees, wire runs can be up to 700FT. So we put a unit in the middle attached to a fence post to solve the problem.

Make this simple circuit or modify the 8 port 10/100 switch according to your need put seperate 4 to 5 AMP DC regulated PS and you are done

Take a look at this:

that is correct but in addition we used zener and fuse for short circuit of data pins with Power supply. If cable get damaged and Pin no 4,5 get short circuit with any of 1,2,3,6 zener will be conducting and fuse will be blown so it prevent further damage.

We had tried similar sfuff suggested in link but in some case switch get hange up with more data if not use good switch with better PPS

I am wondering why UBQUITY do not provide this capabilty to their PoE for short circuit. It just need 4 zener and 1 fuse for protection.

Now I'd like to see a DC/DC version for off-grid.

For all Ubiquiti devices, we are using these:

http://beyond-wifi.com/poe/

8 ports in one multi port POE module. With or without enclosure, ships from Texas

For a Unifi installation, we found these:

http://beyond-wifi.com/passive-poe.html

8 ports in one module.
do these work with all of the ubnt equipment, which power supply did you use to power the 8 ports

Your question is answered in link. Read the page. It refers to Ubiquiti.

Take a look at the products from Mstronic
http://www.mse.com.tw/

They do a range of useful products and I am sure they can put you in touch with a distributor.

the ctlinks.com.tw product which was linked above can be purchased from a US domestic source, it's $65:

then add your own 24V meanwell power supply. for 16 ports I would use around a 200W unit.
