View Full Version : Multiple wifi cards, shielding and antenna placements

With all those mini-pci slots for wifi cards I'm wondering if the wifi cards are shielded well enough to live that close together by default or extra precautions must be taken to ensure proper shielding.

Can I assume that mini-pci radios are well enough shielded that several can be mounted on the same motherboard without interference?

Let me give you some background; I currently have a problem with a repeater node (B below), here the Internet uplink is at A and C is the 2.4 GHz cluster in town:

A <-- 5 km (26 dBi parabolics) --> B <-- 800m (19 dBi panels) --> C

The A-B link is on channel 152 (5.76 GHz turbo) and the B-C link is on channel 160 (5.8 Ghz turbo), the two antennas are just about back-to back, so spacing is about 10 cm).

I get 30 Mb/s throughput in either direction from B, but when testing throughput via that node from A to C, I get only 10 Mb/s, so I suspect interference between the two radios.

I guess my real question is if I can be certain that it's the antenna placement that's bad or if I also have to suspect the mini-pci radios?

With what I have gathered I should have at least 1 m between the two antennas even though they are back to back, is that enough without any extra channel spacing (there are only 2 static turbo channels in that part of the 5 GHz band)?

Hello Flemming,

The Ubiquiti radio's have very good shielding on them as is. Even with this shielded proper channel planning must be taken into account when using multiple radio cards.

Thanks,

Mike

Ok, what is proper channel planning?

20 MHz separation?

Hello,

Yes this is correct.

hi,

compared to the Mikrotik triple shot, the routerstation will be many orders easier to isolate the radio cards!

the XR cards are well screened to help too. (you cant even get more than one of these in a MT triple shot board :(
