I'm looking to set up a short range (~1000 meter) point-to-point link, and am leaning towards a PowerStation, although a bullet might work.

I must admit to having little experience with this - I tend to stick to the application layer, not the network layer.

I am on a hill, and have line of sight to the top of a roof on a nearby business; they are willing to work something out with me, provided the dish is small.

I am located at 30° 18' 06"N, 97° 57' 55"W, and they are located at 30° 18' 38"N, 97° 57' 58"W. While I have direct line of sight, I don't know if the Fresnel Zone is blocked.

The software I used is intended for social networking; it doesn't do GPS altitude. If necessary, I can whip something up to speak NMEA and pull it directly from the receiver.

Is this doable, and what Ubiquiti device would work best?

Hello Cyt0,

Ill let someone else jump in here with the calculator, but assuming the Fresnel zone is clear I would recommend the NanoStation's if you are looking for a small unit.

Thanks,

Mike

Ok...I'm jumping in here. The Nano will get you a 13 dB fade margin, which would be fine for that short of distance. I plotted with a Bullet and 24 dBi BBQ style grid antenna that will give you a 29 dB fade margin.

That looks good - how hard is it to align the dishes? Does it just take two guys with cell phones?

WHT:

If you want a screenshot of only the current window, you can use Alt-Printscreen. It's a little easier than cutting a specific window from a full screenshot.

That command would still capture way too much for me. Paintshop lets me capture a smaller mouse defined area.

Easier with two people as you have to change the units from AP to Station back and forth to aim them with signal levels.

Do my maps jive with what you know of from the ground?

Pretty close - at the house, it would be closer to 10m from the ground, but otherwise they look spot on. That's a function of my 2 story house, so there would be no way to know that :)

I ended up going with the NanoStations - the Bullets seem to be popular, and availability looked like an issue.

I think WHT deserves another t-shirt. :)

Edit:

Unless he has moved to CA and working for ubnt; all bets are off.

Shesh...I ain't even got my first one.

And no...I ain't moving to California.

so there would be no way to know that

<cough> <ahem>

Your white chimney is 42 feet above grade on a steep roof. I was thinking your best bet would be to mount it in the peak of the back roof eaves and point the antenna directly over the jacuzzi thing on the right side of your swimming pool. At first I thought the 200 gallon propane tank out past your six foot black iron fence would have been a good landmark, but realized it was sixty feet too far west.

Edited...
Sorry, it looks like you want to aim it over your pool's diving board.

out past your six foot black iron fence

Yeah, yeah, I've got the aerials, too. Besides, it's a 3 foot iron fence :)

As for the no way to know comment, I was refering to the fact that I hadn't stated it would be going on my roof - FWIW, my DirecTV dish is not. We get some pretty serious wind on the hill, but for something as compact as a PowerStation, it's not really much of an issue.
