We currently have a couple local banks hooked up with us on some old Cisco BR350 equipment. This stuff has been up for about 10 years and we have started to have some trouble with it over the last few days. We are planning on switching their links to 5.8 Ubiquiti equipment. This link has to super reliable and basically provide 100% uptime with no throughput drags. Here is some info. / questions:

1.) Bank#1 is a stone throw away, less than a tenth of a mile at relatively the same height.
2.) Bank#2 is about a tenth of a mile away and is about 50 feet lower than us.
3.) We have to use security on the link, any recommendations?
4.) We currently have (1) PS5-EXT; (2) PS5; (3) NS5; (3) Bullets; and assorted antennas ranging from omnis to panels to grids. Any recommendation for which equipment to use as the AP? as the stations for each?
5.) Any other setup suggestions?

I don't want to use "overpower" the equipment, but want to make sure the link is solid with no downtime. Thanks for your input.

As long as you don't exceed..oh, say -40 dBm on the received signal at the client, you won't overload the receiver. When I say don't exceed -40 dBm, that means -30 dBm is too strong, -50 is all right, and -70 is getting to weak.

You don't want to reduce the access point power to accommodate the nearest client as it ill be too low of power for the farthest client. So what you can do do is intentionally misalign the client antenna to reduce the signal.

Where -50 is the number, no more, no less. -50 shall be the number thou shalt use, and the number to be used shall be -50. -70 thou shall not use, neither use -20. -10 is right out. Once the number -50, being the fourth magnitude above the receiver threshold, be used, then lobbest thy data towards thy client, who being correctly WPA encryption approved, shall use it.

Thanks. Any suggestions on which equipment to use at each location?

All the UNBT radios you have on hand are pretty much the same, so any combination you want to use would work.

Hello Zrob,

At such short distances I would recommend the Nano Loco's.

Thanks,

Mike

Here is what I decided to do:
AP = PS5-EXT with 10dbi omni
Bank#1 = not yet setup
Bank #2 = NS5

I initially chose 5755 as my frequency and Bank#2 had a dbm of -35. I then changed the frequency to 5180 and the dbm now sits at -56. Why did that happen? Will this link be reliable at the -56dbm?

In case you were wondering the omni is rated as 5.175 - 5.875.

Another piece on info: CCQ has been 100% or slightly below at all times.

Hello Zrob,

The reason the link lost power at that frequency is that the NS5 antenna is tuned from 5.4Ghz to 5.9Ghz. You are losing a lot of gain by using the sub 5.4 frequencies.

Thanks,

Mike

I then changed the frequency to 5180 and the dbm now sits at -56.

I believe the low channels of 5ghz are for indoor use only. Someone else should chime in to verify though as i'm not 100 percent sure on the exact channels :)

In the U.S., Ch. 36, 40, 44, and 48 are for indoor use only. Therefore if you set Country to U.S. and Obey Regulatory then it will limit your power to 17 dBm. If you do not use Obey, then it will run full power.

Check to see if you have the Obey box checked.

The obey box is checked. Although the link dbm dropped, the link had been solid so far so I'll probably leave it how it is.

Thanks!
