You mean what kind of equipment you need on the client side when talking to a 17 dBi access point? And how do you define "workable".

First answer: 20 miles

Second answer: Half mile.

Both are correct answers.

i was talking about using powerstation 5 as the client

Both answers are still correct.

It will work up to 20 miles at the lowest data speed setting and poor reliability and ideal Fresnel clearance.

It will work up to half a mile at the highest data speed with excellent reliability and clear line of sight.

Hello Rclark,

What are your goals for this long distance link. What speeds are you looking for, what level of reliablity?

Thanks,

Mike

Speed, distance, reliability, price...pick three.

mostly reliable

no more than 1.5mbs

Hello Rclark,

At that range you should be able to get 1.5mbps as long as the link is close to perfect.

Thanks,

Mike

hi,

we have a PS5 over 26km to a 15dBi sector, gets 20 Mbps TCP, it is a 40MHz channel too.

15dBi sector has an XR5 and an old RB532 (most likely the limit to throughput)

It is a clear line of sight hill to hill link with a flat valley in the way so pretty ideal.

The XR5 is 7dB more capable on transmit than the PS5 though if you wind em up to full.

26Km? At 3 miles I'm getting -68 dBm so I'm pretty imressed. What is your signal level at that distance?

I have a PS2 shooting 29km to a stock NS2 AP (in a cluster)
through put is low but it has been very reliable ( perfect LOS)

I also have a NS5 in a reflector shooting 31.2km to a stock NS5 as the AP
-76 dBm both sides 100% ccq at a 1.5 data rate

The 5G does drop off in heavier rain and snow but LOS is not clear and the reflector isnt exactly optimized for a nano either

all in all Im impressed and
I know I can improve on this numbers

Impressive. All I know is that I wouldn't want to be the support tech on that.

hi,

highest throughput, if you have full rate 54mbps is ~25 Mbps TCP or ~45Mbps UDP.

signals need to be better than -70dBm on average to give some margin.

for a 12km LoS link this is possible.
