View Full Version : Height of AP

I have a basic question. I have a working wireless bridge with the receiver on a tower on my roof. I have an AP setup to broadcast to my neighbors. I can see 8 houses while standing in my yard even when the leaves are on the trees. When the leaves come back, the trees will have a canopy going from about 12' to 30'.

I would think I'd want my AP down at about 6' - the same height that I can see all the houses at, as oppssed to having it 20' in the air on my roof where it will be broadcasting right into the canopies of the trees.

This make sense? I mean, line of sight is line of sight, right?

An AP at six feet will have poor Fresnel clearance.

Worse than directly into the leaves? Maybe at the top of the view channel around 12' better?

Well if you can only get your mast up to 20 ft. and the trees are as high as 30 ft., you might be better off staying low as the trees will hurt your signal, where as a poor Fresnel would be merely iffy. Either way, its going to be a try and see if it doesn't work at 6 ft., you can always go back and do a 30 or 40 ft. mast at your end.

So is the theory that penetrating the canopy from above will be less dense than shooting through it? I can get up to 35' in height at the moment, by spring I will have my tower back up which can get me around 50-60'.

If you mean "penetrating the canopy from above" as in shooting OVER the trees, then yes it is better than shooting THOUGH or UNDER them.
