Will the Bullet2 act as a client on my current generic outdoor AP and also act as an access point in that area? I've heard that many WDS protocols are incompatible, and have no clue what is in use on my current cheap existing APs. Just want to make sure that it would work as a client if nothing else.

Almost certainly WDS won't work between your existing AP and any UBNT product. But the Bullet 2, Locostation 2, and Nanostation 2 will work just fine as a station/client with your AP.

Will it work in a Client/AP mode though? Where the Bullet acts as a client to the existing AP and as its own AP where users can connect nearby? The existing APs however cheap have that mode which is kind of cool in that I can combine them with other hardware.

As far as WDS, would they work with DD-WRT nodes? I have DD-WRT on some of the other hardware and they interop between manufacturers as long as they all use DD-WRT. I figured since this firmware is more open source, it may be of similar design.

That's what WDS does.

As long as all the hardware has the compatible WDS firmware, but that is very rarely the case.

Of course they are interoperable. See above...that's because they all have the same and compatible firmware.

I figured since this firmware is more open source, it may be of similar design.

Open source has nothing to do with it. Its a matter of WDS not being a standard at this point, therefore theres no guarantee of compatible. Kinda like pre-N stuff.
