View Full Version : 15 miles with bullet?

Hello,

I am just a network guy, I don't deal with wireless at work but I need to get a wireless link hooked up for my home. I am about 15 miles from point to point, I think I have enough height (probably 60 feet on one end, maybe 10 feet on the other).

Will a bullet and an antenna get me a good connection at this distance? Is that all I need? I am guessing the bullet is a bridge, but it never really says that is what it does. I am hoping to do better than the 1Mb connection I have right now, is that a realistic goal at this distance with a bullet?

If the bullet works, what dbi antenna should I use? Thank you!

Hey mellestad,

The PowerStations might give you this distance and you won't have to order a seperate antenna. I would recommend the PS5. Unfortunately, the only way for you to find out how they will perform in your situation, would be to buy a set and find out. From what I've read here, if you have clear LoS, they'll probably give you at least 5Mb/s, possibly even a bit more.

Grtz,

Oliver

Hello,

Oliver is correct. PowerStation 5 may work, but needs to be tested. You could also use the Bullet5 with some high gain dish/grid antennas.

Do you have line of site to each location that you are trying to bridge?

Thanks,

MIke

mellestad...

If you PM me with your GPS numbers, I can run a propagation plot for ya.

I should have line of site. I have good los on my end, and I have flexibility on where I mount an antenna on the remote side.

It looks like the powerstation would be fine, any particular model? Would 2.5 or 5ghz be better?

Finally,

Any prefered retailers, and do I need a POE box, or do they come with one? I have some, but I don't want to fry something by using the wrong widget.

Hello Mellestad,

You are less likely to be interfered with on the 5Ghz band. The PowerStation's do come with PoE adapters and injectors.

Thanks,

Mike

I have 7 links between 13 and 16 miles, all powered by mikrotik with SR5 and 27dB grid, against a node equipped with SR5 and 17dB sectorial panel.
All working correctly from 3 years.
For distances smaller than 10 mile we successfully used radios of 100mw and for less than 6 miles radios of 65mw, always with 27dB grids.
The node is mounted in a tower of 200 feet and the clients in towers of 75 feet.
The height of tower is important so that it does not affect by the weather conditions.
May be PS5 with external 27dB grid is your best shot.

Ok, I just used Google Earth to measure and it is actually about 8 miles, but my height is not as solid. I probably only have a few meteres of clearence over trees on one side. Does that make any difference, or just stick with two PS5-22V PowerStation5s?

Hello Mellestad,

You may not be clearing the Fresnel zone in this link with only a few meters of separation from the trees. How far out is this tree line from that side of the link?

Thanks

Mike

~600 feet?

How high above the trees would I need to be sure?

Can you publish the coordinates or to send file KMZ of GE… would be useful to determine if single are trees or is necessary to consider altitude difference of land.

I'm gonna run a Radio Mobile plot in a bit. I have his GPS points.

For 5.8 Gig with 22 dBi grid antennas, you'll need 20 meters at one end and 10 meters at the other for a .8 Fresnel zone clearance and it'll get you a 32 dBm signal. The 3.30 KM distance is to the trees, your worst clearance point of 9 meters (width of the beam)...so trees may be a problem.

[edited for corrections]
For 2.4 Gig with 24 dBi grid antennas, you'll need 26 meters at one end and 10 meters at the other for a .8 Fresnel zone clearance and it'll get you a 40 dBm signal. The 3.30 KM distance is to the trees, your worst clearance point of 14 meters (width of the beam)...so trees will be a bigger problem.

very good WHT and very informative foranybody who work with radio communications, fresnel zone is applicable i think on any radio communication
just i want to know what software u use for this analysis? ist that small caption "radio link"?

Its not an intuitive easy program to use, but once ya learn all the tricks...ya can rip out a plot like that in a few minutes.

Thanks WHT, that is great stuff! I think I can find a two story house on the edge of that lip, and that will give me a 10 meter tower plus another few meters of increased elevation and get rid of the tree problem too. On the Moses_1 side I doubt I can do much more, but it should be fine with the increased elevation on the far side. If all else fails I can always just replace the "tower" on that end (an 8 foot post on top the hill, haha).

I have already dealt with Marlin(Marlon?) from Accima Wireless in the past, and the service was not good at all. I currently use Spectrum Communications. They do a great job, but to get anything faster than 1Mbit is very expensive. I will poke around and see if I can find a likely tower site this weekend. Thank you all very much for the help!!

He uses Radio Mobile which you can get at http://www.cplus.org/rmw/english1.html.

As with any tool, you must interpret the results correctly and carefully.

One of these days....and I've been saying it for over four years now, I'll get around to authoring a decent tutorial for Radio Mobile.

Go for for it. I have an engineering degree and learning Radio Mobile was painful. I'm sure I'm not alone in this one based on the questions that I see on their Yahoo site.

Go for for it.
Yeah...yeah...yeah...after whut you told me to do with my road show?

> So tell me, how does it look?

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

rconaway asked me "So tell me, how does it look?" in reference to the mesh Batman project. I told him....

Well, Batman's black and grey themed get up is still a popular
monochromatic version of Jackie "O"s 1962 "simplicity & power" fashion
statement, kinda of whut Condi Rice did in Europe two years ago. But
Robin still looks like a cross between Carmen Miranda and Michale
Jackson.

<sigh>...I can be sooo wrong at times.

I feel like I'm talking to the unknown comic :) or a Henny Youngman reincarcination.

Next time I'm under an NDA, I'm not telling you.

it looks like radiomobile it's free and it's good stuff, my learning curve on it was a bit dull but man, it's realy awsome, now i just have to learn how to correctly build antenna patterins!
