View Full Version : How much would it cost to develop a mesh firmware

If you didn't need things like load balancing, just which direction is the best signal plus some type of management tool to show you active and backup paths and it need to run n the Bullet or Loco, what type of financial resources would be needed? I will take someone's best guess or if they have an alternative idea like the open WDS with an "Area" type feature and security, that would be good too.

If you have an idea of what multiple SSID's would require also independently, that is also helpful. The last question is whether this would fit in the memory on a Bullet or Loco.

Hey Rconaway,

Have you checked out the OpenMESH Robin project?

Thanks,

Mike

Very interesting. Will it run on the bullets? Their hardware doesn't meet my design needs. Mike, your hardware rocks. I'm getting it into governments now that can't afford the same over-priced products they were purchasing over the last 5 years. Dude works fine for monitoring but installation and configuration is a little different and WDS is fine but it's a manual process. Mesh would work far better with signal quality analysis. Auto WDS might work also if it had signal quality analysis and would only work with secured WDS links.

Michael is on record as saying “We hope other companies and manufacturers will pick up on the open source ROBIN sofware
and include it in their hardware”, explained Burmeister-Brown.

Has Ubiquiti had a play Mike ??

The OpenMesh routers are based on Atheros chips :-)

I learned many things late last night on that project. I was looking at the wrong guys. That and WHT has been yanking my chain for 24 hours. It looks like the next step is getting the HP units out or sucking up to my wife to get her to start working through the code to see what the chopping compromises will be. It also means I need to look at the RS-232 port again if you have the data.

Michael, don't forget to send me the RS-232 data please.

Just got an email from Mike @ open-mesh saying the firmware should work fine with 8Mb of memory meaning HP's or Pico's.

than who will do the porting with B2hp and Pico?

Would like to see mesh loaded bullets and picos around..

I am working on them i have a working deployed mesh network with images that are less then 3MB running in production now. equiptment has been acquired for further testing.... we are almost there. I did post test images to the guys at Ubiquiti last night, with 0-config capabilities, i have a working environment with dashboard and all

outbackdingo:

Looks like you've gotten deep... How much customization did you do on the image? I noticed you have an IP6 stack in there... Is that part of the original image? I have only begun to scratch the surface on the firmware side of things for these radios. I am using/testing the Open-Mesh mini routers... How are your Ubiquiti units functioning? Any similarities? I have found that I very much like the functionality of the mini-routers but the power output is starved. If I could set up Bullet2HPs to run Open-Mesh, it would make my life alot easier for my AMR project. Also, you mentioned that you are using a dashboard. Is that the open-mesh.com dashboard or a third party one? Sorry for all the questions... Feel free to direct me to answers. Thank you...

ok, my images are ipv4/ipv6 capable, we are still working out the ipv6 stuff
we will be dashboard compatible with open-mesh, orangemesh and the new meshconnect
we currently use orangemesh in production with a fully deployed ns2 network based on our images, we have 48 nodes now deployed, 6 are gateways. we are adding up to 20 more in the next 2/3 weeks. we currently carry over 100-125 users daily and climbing. we cover over 70 sq kilometers of both mountainous, foliage covered rocky terrain, a marina, and building populated areas. we use multiple 4/6Mb DSL links connected to various locations/gateways on our deployment. we have had really no issues once signal was adjusted in some areas after initial deployment. It really kinda pretty much runs. We have also experienced high dsl outages in areas as the infrastructure here is quite bad. and network transitions have really been quite smooth and worked nicely. like yesterday we did experience 4 complete dsl line outages, effectively splitting the whole network in two, and 2 single dsl lines carried all traffic for 10 hours, it got a bit slow but all nodes were up, reporting and transitioned quite well.

Outbackdingo-

Can you share the firmware?

Also, could you PM me? It sounds like you are doing something similar to what I'm trying to do, but on a different continent.

Thanks!

Any chance I could get to try out these images....I would like to test it on different UBNT hardware here in London.

Did this project really get done? Is it available?
