Hi there:

I've been reading with great interest several of the threads in here. I was wondering if you guys could provide some advise regarding my application:

We have high speed broadband that we would like to share with family members. They are older and not technically savvy, so I'm trying to get them up to speed.

Currently, we have this setup

D
...C
.....B
.....A

Site A is the one with high speed internet. From the front part of site B to site A the distance is about 20m (66 feet). There is a LOS between site A and B if the antenna was to be placed on the roof. There are no trees.

Site C is a bit diagonally from Site B and the distance from Site B to he middle point of Site C is 20m as well. From the right angle there's also a LOS between Site A and C. There's one very little orange tree between Site B and C but its not high so if the antenna is placed on both roofs, then there is no obstruction.

Site D is diagonal from Site C and the distance between the middle point of Site C and D is also 20m. There is some LOS if the antenna on Site D was to be placed with a higher mast, since Site C is elevated and Site D is lower. There are some trees between Site C and D (one or two trees)

So my question is, for this type of application, what product would work. Price would be a factor, since I would be the one acquiring the equipment. The needs are not that complicated. NO gaming or anything like that. Site A,C, and D will be doing light web browsing and email. Site B (me) would be doing some file sharing inside the site's LAN and maybe (just maybe) some low-end VOIP if its viable. Each site would have a router to maintain the traffic separate so I was thinking some Linksys routers flashed with Tomato or DD-WRT.

Which equipment would do the job at a lower cost? I was thinking of a few hundred dollars ($500) at most not including the routers but I may be off base, so I welcome any feedback.

Cheers,

Roy

Hello Roy,

I would suggest our Bullet 2. You can connect these to Omni antennas and have very good coverage. Depending on the type of Structure, you might only need one or 2 units to full cover the area you are talking about as these radios have a lot of power behind them, when coupled with a high gain omni.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike:

The more I read about the new products, the more I time I had to think about what I wanted to do and the more I became confused over which product line to pick. I put up a map of the setup since a pic is worth a thousand words. As a recap:

Site A is the one with high speed internet (dsl modem with WRT600n dual band wifi router with ddwrt firmware for qos purposes). From the front part of site B to site A the distance is about 20m (66 feet). There is LOS and no trees.

Site C is a bit diagonally from Site B and the distance from Site B to
he middle point of Site C is 20m as well. From the right angle there's
also a LOS between Site A and C. There's one very little orange tree
between Site B and C but its not high so if the antenna is placed on
both roofs, then there is no obstruction.

Site D is diagonal from Site C and the distance between the middle
point of Site C and D is also 20m. There is LOS if the antenna on
Site D was to be placed with a higher mast, since Site C is elevated
and Site D is lower.

I'm so confused with all the antennas and the difference between the bullet, ns2 and ns2loco. So which would work here with the least amount of hassle/cost? The folks I'm doing this for are retirees, so it comes out of my pocket so they can get wired .

Thanks again for your help.

For lowest cost, I'd run a Pico 2 with it's included 6 dBi omni antenna and Loco 2 radios for the clients.

Added...the Pico comes with a PoE power supply.
