I'm hoping that this is either a brainfart or something to do with my inexperience with wireless networks... but my problem seems to be related to WPA/WPA2.

After some more careful reading, fiddling, and what-have-you, I finally got my link setup. Essentially, it's as follows:

Home Network <---> NS5 (Station/Bridge) <~~~> NS5 (AP/Bridge) <---> WISP 802.11a unit <~~~> WISP network

<~~~> = Wireless Link
<---> = Wired Link

It's akin to what I described earlier here (http://forum.ubnt.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2991&highlight=).

Got everything setup so that the NS5s were communicating with each other and their corresponding networks. I'm getting great speeds through to WISP.

So, I left the final task to be setting up security, which up until this point I left it open. So I read, and it said to set the access point up first, -then- the station. So I did that. WPA2-AES PSK. First did it to the Access Point remotely... lost connection... then did it to the station by my house, same settings... and as I was expecting them to connect now that they had the same security settings, that was not the case. Tried rebooting the house unit, no connection. Tried rebooting the other unit, no connection. Changed to normal WPA2, same results. WPA, same results.

So, did I do something wrong here? or is it some sort of bug. My connection is back up now that I've changed it back to an open network.

I rather hope that this is some sort of embarrassing brain fart on my part, because that will be a lot easier to fix :P

First of all I see that you are configured WPA-AES(CCMP) on one side and WPA (both AES(CCMP) and TKIP). Try to set the same at both ends (like WPA-TKIP) for a try

Oh, I might be in luck, it could be a brainfart. test of both WPA-TKIP PSK worked. I'm assuming I had the station configured to both, UBNT-keba, and the access point to only WPA-AES? (If it was visa versa, then something is still bugged, because when the access point is operating in both, it should accept one or the others)

Doing further testing as I wait for my eggs.

Set both to WPA-AES. Failed. I'm completely sure both were set (at least at the UI end-user level) to WPA-AES, as I took a screenshot with me. Going to try another WPA2-TKIP next. Note that this takes a while as I have to drive between both points physically.

Uploading settings for confirmation, in case something fishy is going on in configuration that I'm not seeing in the UI.

WPA2-TKIP successful. Will attempt WPA2-AES next. Usually I "zero" the devices first by switching them over to no protection before switching them over to the new protection. 30 second rule applies.

Thoughts: What's the operating temperature range of the NanoStation 5s? Being that Ubiquiti Networks is in California, you should be aware of the rather hot temperatures in the Central Valley of California.

We're getting temperatures between 95 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit this week.

I bring up the aspect of temperature because as far as I'm aware, AES is a hardware-intensive encryption while TKIP is software intensive (One requires beefier hardware, the other adds excess overhead to the network). If AES is requiring more hardware power, and the heat down here is getting to the unit, that may cause it to overheat and possibly not process everything correctly?

I figured I'd take a shot at a random theory. I should also mention that my station, despite not being able to connect to the AP's UI or internet, is getting full signal to the AP, as well as detecting it in Site Survey.

Anyhoo, config for both units under WPA2-AES.

Theory:
AES encryption is said to be more hardware intensive (as in working at the hardware level), and TKIP is said to be more software intensive (as in working at the soft network level). It's said that when AES was introduced, certain older, cheaper 802.11 units couldn't simply just implement it into a firmware upgrade because of the larger hardware requirements.

Considering the heat in the central valley during the summer, which this week, hovers between 95 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit, it could be possible that the added strain to the hardware from AES is causing the unit to overheat.

However, this theory is a bit far fetched, because the max operating temperature claimed by your datasheets is 158 degrees Fahrenheit, and I'm not really sure if the unit is really getting that hot, even it is in direct sunlight, attached to a metal pole via included zip-ties, and on top of a metal roof. I wasn't much of a physics guy so I really couldn't tell you.

So it's likely my theory is wrong in retrospect, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

As for default WPA and WPA2 not working, I'm going to assume that either way, WPA and WPA2 are -defaulting- to AES instead of TKIP, which would cause it to fail.

Suggestion:
Could you possibly add another feature in the next firmware that, for NanoStations, when you select WPA/WPA2 non-specific encryption, that when it communicates with another unit that's using WPA/WPA2 non-specific encryption, that there's a little box beside it that allows you to choose if it defaults to TKIP or AES.

Will check back on this post later.

As I expected, the overheating theory was a bit far fetched. I tested it in the night on WPA2-AES, and no luck still.

Anything yet on your end, UBNT-Mike? I'll bump sometime during Tuesday if I don't hear anything.

On that note, sometime during next week I won't have a laptop anymore to configure the AP personally via wire, so my ability to test will be hampered and slowed.

hi,

can confirm 3.1.1 NS5 as a client is happy in WPA2 AES with a MT rb433 AP 3.11

from a previous post of mine tho there is a fight between NS5 as an AP and MT clients with 2.9.x code in anything but WEP and open.

basically in that combo no TKP or AES will work. maybe related?

I just setup a 5ghz link using rb433 v3.13 for the AP and NS5 for the client radio. I used wpa2-aes with preshared key and its works fine.

Haven't tried MT as a client and NS5 as the AP, as that would be too much work to setup and configure an MT for every customer!

be warned, 3.13 has some serious issues with routing, wasted a lot of time here in order to downgrade to 3.11 again.

WPA/WPA2 is fine as MT AP, its only a problem if you use the NS as an AP as we did to fill in coverage for 2 customers and they were MT clients. ok as long as its 3.x and not 2.95.x .

I just set up a MikroTik RB433AH with XR5, and tested all combinations of AES and TKIP between WPA and WPA 2 and had no issues.

If you read my previous posts on testing I did, along with config files, I detailed the method I used.

I currently am running WPA2-TKIP on both the AP and the Station, which works fine.

WPA, WPA-AES, WPA2, WPA2-AES aren't working though.

I have tried using WPA and WPA 2, in both TKIP and AES mode with MikroTik as the AP and NS as the client.

I have also tried NS to NS with V 3.1.1 and V3.2RC2 and both WPA and WPA2 with both TKIP and AES and have not ran into issues getting them connected.

Yes, I've tried the configuration of your Nanostation with 3 different routeros versions including the latest (3.13). So far I've encountered no issues in any WPA/WPA2 configuration.
Can you please check the routeros log for any clues what's happening? Is there a chance to capture the wireless frames with the sniffer?

Can you please confirm that you are using the latest Nanostation FW (NS5.ar2313.v3.2-rc2.3578.080807.1727.bin)

Alright, so as I explained to UBNT-Zy in response, I don't have a computer to use with an 802.11a card, as that was never really my purpose, so I can't sniff wireless packets I think. The laptop I'm currently using for testing has been graciously extended to me until friday.

Anyhoo... installed latest firmware. doesn't fix my problem.

Hello BeAuMaN,
there is only clue in the nanostation logs that "WPA: group key handshake" is not initiated after "Pairwise key handshake completed" thus the client is not authenticated. Can you please check if using "tkip" group cipher in routeros side solves an issue while "aes" unicast cipher is selected?

Can you please check what is said in routeros system log?

As for 64.203.123.41, that is just the laptop I'm using of my friend's, that I connect to RadNet2 in place of the ISP's ethernet so I can access the WebUI of RadNet2 if the connection between RadNet1 and RadNet2 are down.

Anyhoo, I can probably test again tonight for whatever it is you want me to try.

Hello BeAuMaN,

I'm not sure it that was the case of yours but I was able to recreate strange behavior with WPA2 - station had refused to authenticate after dozen of tries to switch from TKIP to AES, however it can be somewhat related to the so called "blacklisting" as the station can become blacklisted if it supplies wrong wpa encryption keys for number of times. After short time / hw reboot the issue had gone. Will continue on investigation on this. At the meantime, can you please re-check is the full HW reboot of the both link endpoints does not solves the issue?

Ah, it's good to find out I was not completely crazy. I'll definitely try this, just in case I only HW-reset one side.... sadly, I've lost access to my friend's laptop... so I'll run this test likely on a night when I can lug my big 18"x18"x18" computer over to the workshop :P

Yes, I've tried the configuration of your Nanostation with 3 different routeros versions including the latest (3.13). So far I've encountered no issues in any WPA/WPA2 configuration.

Try taking two PS5s, with the latest firmware, and set them in AP WDS and Station WDS mode. Then enable WPA2-AES and see if they associate AND pass traffic.

All I see is this:
