Can u tell me if the NS5 now shipping has the ESD suppression changes you agreed to back in April or May?

When will the NS2 begin shipping?

Hello Robert,

Is there any way to find out if my unit has enhanced ESD protection or not because last night I lost 1 NS5 (my first one the field), it was side by side with canopy. Nothing happened to canopy, but NS5 lost ethernet.

Hello Nepalken,

Unfortunately the only way to tell would be to pull the unit apart and physically look for the changes. If you could post me a picture of the PCB I can let you know.

Thanks,

Mike

Hello Mike,

Though this thread was supposed to be closed, I noticed something this morning that drew my attention.

from the pic, you told me it did not have ESD protection, but on the outside cover (paper box), there is a logo of ESD and and says 15KVA RF/ESD protection.

I am confused, is the unit without protection or the paper box was new and the inside board was old.

Hello Nepalken,

I believe the date code to be 0836 for RP-SMA with ESD protection. This is the number to the left of the MAC address.

Thanks,

Mike

Hello Mike,

Yes that is the code on the left of MAC address. However, written below the connector is "SMA" and not "RP-SMA"

Hope that helps to a bit extent

Thanks

Hello Mike,

I have received the new stock of NS5 and I am comparing the board of the blown one and the new one. I don't find any difference. Can you tell me how to identify the board with Enhanced ESD protection.

Thanks

Those of us that come from the two way market would never dream of relying on a manufacturer for lightning protection. The voltages and the current by lightning can be devastating. Once it gets inside to the pc board, it really does not matter what protection you have, you have to stop it from getting inside. The only way to do that is products made from polyphaser corporation. We have 30 years of experience on commercial towers. Do not run up a simple cat 5 up a tower and not use outside protection for your equipment. That does not make good sense considering how much the tower climb to replace this equipment will cost you. Ethernet chips are a known issue on canopy as well. None of them react well to lighting. Another issue you may find is the delayed reaction. Your canopy may be fine now, but a week, or a month from now for no reason whatsoever, it quits. Another thing we do especially on commercial rf towers is use rf chokes on both ends of the cat 5. This will help keep rf from interfering with you as well. Canopy had a known issue of having to slow the ethernet down to 10 mbs to keep errors from happening. You can buy these chokes at radio shack. You will be surprised at how little trouble you have with just a little protection.

All I can say is that seeing a lighting bolt come down on the inside of a ten foot face tower's inside 1/4" aircraft cable load line running down between your legs is...umm, sobering.

Johnny,

I agree to what you have said. The reason I want to know about protection is because few months back I had a bunch of fist NS5 and I put one in tower just below the canopy cluster for test. After 2 days, we had lightening and the NS5 ethernet stopped working while nothing happened to canopy.

So I wanted to know if NS5 were as good as canopy with ESD. We have deployed more than 2000 canopies are happy with them about ESD. Mostly they blow the NIC they are connected to it, instead of blowing their own ethernet ports.
