I was thinking the basic airview, with less range, might actually work better since I can better identify the location of interference. Does this make sense? I don't have a lot of square footage to cover so not sure if the external model is really adding anything. Would you agree?

Just remember that the way 802.11 works is that it waits until the air is clear through several mechanisms before being able to send data. So, even though you only need to cover only a small area, if any of your devices can hear other traffic (802.11 or other) on your channel, then you will have problems.
