If you compile strace into your f/w image, you can "watch" some of the applications that may be tickling the gpio lines connected to the rssi leds.
# strace -p <pid-of-process>
Maybe do a little watching of /bin/infcltd and /bin/hostapd You may need to do a little trickery like stop the existing one and start a new one (# strace /bin/infcltd) so you can log the os calls to open() that typically happen early in process startup but that might get you going.
