Hi Mike, UBNT
Can you please confirm once and for all if CSMA is on or off when Airmax is enabled? I would really like to know as it affects our planning.

Hello,
Again, I have asked for clarification from my software guys and they state that it is indeed disabled.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
As I have seen requested in another post somewhere in the forums it would be nice if we had access to a white paper on Airmax & TDMA even if your not doing anything particularly special with 802.11n it would be good to have a solid reference.

So if it is indeed disabled; can someone please tell me why we will need to back off when there is a canopy around as Mike suggested before ?

CSMA is a mechanism avoiding collisons by listening the channel activity (noise). This is why legacy 802.11x devices cannot co-operate by other non-CSMA devices. If CSMA is disabled, no need for back off in my humble opinion.
But ofcourse we need clarification from UBNT.

Hey Guys,
Even with CSMA disabled, you can still get interference. Disabling CSMA is not a magic cure all. If the carrier is still strong it will still cause packet errors, and force retries, lowering performance. This is the just nature of RF energy.

I think this nature of RF energy doesnt apply to the Canopies around me as much as it applies to me :D

Can we please have an option to disable CSMA when not using AirMax.
Thanks

most probably you cant have this option due to the nature of 802.11x protocol
You can only have it when AirMAX is ON, I guess.

This is 100% correct.

You can be sure that canopy will suffer if you disable CSMA.
Anyway, you will have problems if both work in the same frequencies.
