Is there a simple calcuation to find what the proper output powre should be on Stations in a WISP based on different distances they stations are from the Access Point? I have just been guesing so far and lowing the output power on the closer stations and leaving it higher the further away my stations get from the AP.

Try this SOM calculator (http://www.terabeam.com/support/calculations/som.php)

You should aim for -55 dBm to -65 dBm RX on the the AP side.

so as a rule of thumb i was once told to turn the power output down on my cpe devices, is this not the right thing to do? Should i just leave it at max power out?

In almost every case, maximum output power
gives relatively poor performance. Take a look
at the spec sheets--they show that effect.

If you can spare 3-5dB, lower the output. Dave
