View Full Version : What regulatory domain are ubiquiti cards programmed for?

I bought another brand of radio and it's useless as a 5GHz AP because it's programmed for worldwide operation, so it won't ever send beacons in the 5GHz band. I would like to know if the SR71-15 is programmed for FCC regulations, or if it follows some other regulatory scheme.

Thanks,
Jeff

Use "SWX" for the Grantee Code

But my question is not whether the card is approved for FCC use. My question is whether the EEPROM on the card is programmed for FCC regs. Many cards, as I am slowly finding out, are approved by the FCC but have their EEPROMs programmed so they can be used in any country.

You're not going to find any radio manufacture that has country specific EPROM coding. They program the ROM to operate in the entire 2.4/5.8 band and let you select the country or specific use.

But the problem with using the country code is that it may be restricting you from using it in a situation where you legally could. For example, you are allowed much more power in most PtP applications, but the country code may assume you are using it as a PtM and limits your EIRP. And there is no web GUI selection to specify what your antenna gain is for PtP use.

As for the FCC, they clearly states it is the responsibility of the installer to understand the rules, hence they refer to it as a "professional installation" where a professional (not an amateur or home consumer) should know the rules.

Thanks for the further info. My experience has certainly not been that the cards are set for the entire band. All the ones I have bought so far have been programmed for ETSI WORLD which is ok for end user laptops but useless for infrastructure. Compounding that problem is the fact the current linux mac80211 stack actually enforces the EEPROM code, so setting the reg domain to US doesn't even help.
