Ramin Akhbari (ramin@ubnt.com) has been devoting a great deal of personal time to get us what we have been waiting for...A waterfall display for the AirView.

This is a v1.1 beta. Let me stress this a BETA release. He fine tunes it and sends me an updated release once a week based on my suggestions and based on nice improvements that he comes across.

The screen shot and observations are only relative to the current.

You have to remove a previous version before newer version will install. You may have to reinstall the USB drivers (they wil automatically install when you plug in the AirWiew - just follow the instructions).

Ramin encourages us to pass along any suggestions.

WHT, thanks for posting the review and announcement. I did end up updating your screenshot link to one that's a bit more recent.

I hope to be able to have a link for others to download sometime this week. And yes please, once you download it, please immediately report any issues/problems you find with it to us here on the forum.

I'll make an additional entry in the release notes post (http://www.ubnt.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8749) once I make the downloads publicly available.

Cheers,

WHT

Cool...unlike the release before this one, I didn't have to uninstall a previous version.

Waterfall would be great! Much appreciation to Ramin for developing this. :hurray:

Any updates on how this feature is coming?

I apologize to everyone for not having this out yet but some other work priorities interfered and this new version will be delayed for a little while longer. As soon as those are done I'll be able to put the finishing touches on the new version and release it. Sorry for the inconvenience and delay.

I have just downloaded and tested the latest software with it's prototype waterfall display..... an excellent and very usefull function.

The promise of the waterfall display heavily influenced my recent decision to buy an Airview2. The little dongle arrived from the USA today and was up and running with the new software in minutes :icon_biggrin:

Many thanks for your excellent work Ramin :ubnt_banana:

Hi fraser,

Thank you for the purchase and your interest in AirView. I'm glad you found the new version useful. I'm just sorry I didn't get a chance to complete the development of that waterfall chart so it wouldn't have its current time limitation. It's a very processor and memory intensive display and at some point (hopefully soon) I'll get back to it to remove that limitation.

Just out of curiosity, what client platform are you using? (Win, Mac, Linux)

Cheers,

Hi Ramin,

I am very grateful that you decided to release what is effectively a Beta rather than keep us waiting for the final release.

My Airview2 is running on the Win XP SP3 platform using an elderly Dell P4 2.8GHz CPU fitted with 1GB RAM. It runs fine and I had the waterfall running continuously for about an hour. At around the 30-40 minute mark some strange effects became apparent.... missing rows of data and general degredation of the waterfall image detail. This was expected and not a problem for me in my operating scenario.

As I see others have commented, the waterfall display is a very desirable feature for those carrying out RF monitoring exercises and can only help to sell your superb little ISM band SA. All the professional VHF/UHF/SHF radio monitoring equipment that I have operated has included such a feature to assist the operator in visualising the activity within the RF spectrum of interest. Interestingly 3D versions of the waterfall (mountain range style) look good for the sales team demos but IMHO offer little advantage over the standard 2D version.

Thanks for your efforts to improve the Airview2 software and I look forward to future software releases as and when development time permits.

All the Best

Hi Ramin,

You're quite welcome fraser. I figured that was the best thing to do. And just to be clear, all the rest of the enhancement work just fine. It's only the waterfall chart that's released in experimental/beta form.

At around the 30-40 minute mark some strange effects became apparent.... missing rows of data and general degredation of the waterfall image detail. This was expected and not a problem for me in my operating scenario.
Yes, this is exactly what I meant by "experimental", and a major part of the reason why I released this as a maintenance release of 1.0 and not a full 1.1. I'll have a resolution to this issue soon. For now when you reach that point you can just hit the "Reset All Data" and it'll start its data logging all over again.

Oh yes, agreed completely. We knew from some of the early feedback, just after product introduction, that the waterfall chart was a needed feature and that's why I'd been working diligently to get it developed and into user's hands ASAP.

Interestingly 3D versions of the waterfall (mountain range style) look good for the sales team demos but IMHO offer little advantage over the standard 2D version.
Oh yes, lots of very cool colorful mountains and hills but I'm with you on this one. When looking for "the lone bullet" being fired off here and there along the spectrum, nothing beats a simple 2D display. I don't need eye-catching 3D anything, which BTW actually makes it much more difficult to see when along the timeline something occurred.

Latest version of the app v1.0.11 contains an experimental version of the waterfall graph, plus a bunch of other enhancements that was really destined for v1.1 of the app, but I decided to release them in this otherwise maintenance/bug-fix version.

Read about it in the release notes post (http://www.ubnt.com/forum/showpost.php?p=58827&postcount=5).

I tried that version and I thought waterfall is great and useful for a short while. After that it becomes gobbly-gook as more data comes in...

Have you considered making scrollable window frame to fit more information instead of scalling more and more? Or perhaps put waterfall data in a separate tab or window.

To summarize waterfall we all been waiting on needs more work to be useful. I own three scanners so please count my opinion x3 :)

Yes, I apologize for the "experimental" nature of this waterfall graph. A fix for the gobbly-gook is in the works and and will be available soon. Unfortunately as of right now I can't commit to any dates. But please know that we're fully aware of the issue.

For now you can choose to disable the waterfall graph from preferences, and/or hit the "Reset all data" button to re-start the data gathering.
