View Full Version : Wireless IPTV?

Hello,
I work for a small ISP that is implementing FTTH in every community around my residence (sadly I live about 13 miles away from any given community). My problem is I am paying for Dish TV//unreliable internet, when I have a 50 meg connection and free IPTV with all the channels only 13 miles away.
The bandwidth used up for IPTV is on average 3Mbits per second. For HD it is closer to 27Mbits per second being that it is still Mpeg-4 compression.
My preference is to stay in the 5ghz range as there is a wisp in the area that operates at 2.4ghz.
Between the Rocket M5 and the Bullet M5 which would be a better solution for a low latency PtP network that is line of sight and spans 13 miles.
Is there a solution that would be able to handle an HD stream to my set top box?
Thanks for you time!

Oops, just realized others have posted on the topic of wireless IPTV, just curious to see if my range of 13miles LOS would be ok... Without making the FCC angry that is :)

I need to answer the same idea of wifimax

If you have a clear line of sight, a Bullet 5M at each end with a 24 dBi grid antenna would work just great.

ok a bit of a newbie question since i'm a bit new to this wireless networking, if I paired two Bullet 5M's and two of these dishs:
http://www.wifi-stock.com/details/ant58-29dish.html
That should be able to give me enough range to pass 13miles easily?
Does it matter that the dish is not dual polarity?
Any suggestions on an antenna if this one wouldnt work well?

I use these antennas with randome. link to 8 miles. -42 reception quality with 100mw of power in the 5Ghz backbone. :icon_cool:

Sounds cool can't wait to see how it goes with the link.
About this IPTV, how does it work? Will you get a regular tuner on your end and possibly dvr? Or is it just streaming a single channel at a time to your PC or tv? What happens if you want multiple tv's running different channels/rooms?

We get set top boxes, they can be DVR's, or HD's, or SD's... just like the regular RF communities. It gets setup to each TV, and each TV can be on a seperate channel, the STB just pulls a different IP address from our server to tune into that channel.... I just got the equipment in yesterday and hopefully will have it up and running this weekend

just an update.... I setup a wireless connection between the rockets inside the buildling.
Going through several layers of brick walls and other things, I had a signal of -75 and was able to load up our Amino IPTV box and watch TV flawlessly. It worked absolutely perfect once i set everything in WDS mode.
Only thing left is to mount it on the tower and on my parents house and we should be set to go :)
Thanks a ton dave/WHT for the advise, and everyone else that gave me tips I greatly appreciate it!

Well the ISP I work for actually has implemented IPTV as a service in some of our communities. We have FTTH which goes into an ONT on the customer's house. We then run Cat5 in the house and to each TV and put in a set top box. They load up from a server we have at our headend. But as far as a small WISP implementing it in this fashion would be very expensive, but it is possible....
Also.... how far (in theory) would you guess you could go with this 24v adaptor? Would it be able to go as far as ethernet can about 100 meters(ish)?
I dont need a solid answer just a guestimation will do :)

Just an update, I have the link setup, 2 Bullet 5M's, 2 28dBm antennas... about 9(ish) miles.... antennas are not lined up 100% correctly but pretty close, signal is at -73 CCQ is 100%... Speed tests from speakeasy give me about 15 meg down, 15 meg up (which is about what our ISP offers for fiber cutomers) I have also tested both HD and SD IPTV over the link and it has worked absolutely FLAWLESSLY, HD is using close to 22megs consistently and it has not digitized at all.
I would just like to give a HUGE thanks to the UBNT forums for all the help and guidance i've received from Dave,WHT and everyone else that has responded to my questions. You guys haven been great! Also thanks to Ubiquiti for their awesome products at low costs. I would have never tried any of this wireless madness if it was going to cost me an arm and a leg... but my total cost for the link after shipping was around 350.... Just plain awesome.
Thank you all!

This is awesome news!! 9 miles with 2 bullets. Flawless IPTV in HD? This is what I want to provide for customers, IPTV over WIFI.
Thanks for the results!
WifiMax, what antennas did you end up using?

I used 2
http://www.wlanparts.com/product/GD5W-28P-NF/GD5W28PNF_28dBi_4958GHz_Wideband_Parabolic_Grid_Antenna.html
the 28dBi was probably a bit overkill, but I wanted to remain flexible just in case I had to go further for a different link I was considering, but they seem to work pretty well. The pigtail plugged right into the bullet, wrapped it in some tape and that was it for installation :). One antenna came with a slight dent in the grill, but it seems to be working fine.
Here is a picture of the tower that I mounted one of the bullets on :)
