Hi guys,
Im new on this forum and to wireless networking.
The other day me and 2 friends set up a wireless network between our houses, (only 1.8km away).
On my side i have a 90 Degree Sector connected to my Nanostation 2,
On my friends house he has a nanostation2 mounted on his roof facing my house using the internal antenna.
He gets a signal of -73 to -79.
Now my problem is we set this network up for gaming and copying data.
When we copy we get a average speed of 27kb/s.
Now i know we are talking about wireless here but surely i could at least get 1mb/s speeds over 1.8km?
I have a general under standing of all the settings on the ns3 but is there maybe some settings I can tweak to improve my throughput?
Questions:
1: Should auto be enables when choosing my speed.
2: If you have a 16dbi antenna and a 26dbi CPE, would it make a difference putting its power to 26dbi? in other wards can you put a more powerful AP on a smaller dbi.
3: Would spray painting a sector reduce its performance?
Sorry for all the questions but I’m not a pro at this.
Thanks

Not long been using this equipment myself:
But the signal strength is much lower than I acheive on such a short link.
Several thoughts:
Did u do a site survey on your nano to check channel usage in your area.
Check the spec on the sector, 90deg sector will be vertical pol and have a narrow beam width on the horizontal, you could be outside the sweet area at such a short range.
Your friends nano will need the ariel set to vertical or adabtive to match the sectors polarity.
Unless you need to cover the 90 deg area, I would test nano to nano without the sector. They should eat that range if u have LOS.
Speed:
Download the spec sheet at: http://www.ubnt.com/downloads/ns2_datasheet.pdf
Here you will see the relationship between speed and RX sens.
If u set your speed lower your RX sens. increases.
Setting auto active, nano will always attempt best speed with the max speed as what u selected.
For a good stable link I always atempt to get -60db or better
Lastly: there are many threads on this site that can probaly expalin all this better than I do. Look out for related posts answered by WHT or any of the UBNT guys, they are always informative

I would agree that unless you need the sector antenna for other hookups, get rid of it. Site survey is critical and interference will drop your throughput dramatically. Your signal level should be fine, set the ACK for the distance plus 10% and uncheck the "auto" feature for the ACK. Set the data rate for 18Mbps with the "auto" checked (so they can fall back if they need to) and you should see you CCQ over 90% and easily be able to obtain data rates of 6-10Mbps with your signal level. Make sure you do this for both units. If you end up adding more stations you'll need to change the ACK on the source to the longest distance. Also, if you find a relatively clear channel running them both on "adaptive" for the polarity will make the initial setup a little easier, but you need to play with that setting for your area. Sometimes I see better signal strength when locked in one orientation over another. Once you have a dependable link you can play with the data rate to see if you can bump it up to 24 or 36mbps.
You didn't mention if you're running them as AP and client or if they're both in AP/WDS mode, but the former will give you better throughput and generally a more reliable connection speed.

Thanks allot for all your help.
It was helpful i don’t know that much,
The one ap is in ap mode and the other is in client,
Would WDS be better?
So i shouldnt have it on 54Mb/s
The sector is Horizontal i think?? dont know why?
http://www.poynting.co.za/productdisplay.php?id=31&cat_id=3
i play to connect two friend to my ap but im only testing with one?
Should i rather just put the client on adaptive?
I dont have LOS, there are a few trees in the way but its not allot.
And would changing any of those algorithms make a difference?
Thanks allot.
check antenna settings, power, CCQ and noise on diferent channels and polarisation. I have 5-8mbps on a 5.6km link.

Is that actual copy speed?
Like on windoes does it say 7MB/s?
What is CCQ ? (sorry)
And can any one please explain to me polarization or antennas?
Whats is it and how does it effect the performance?
Does Channel Spectrum Width effect it any way?
Under advanced? what should and shouldnt be selected for best performance?
Noise Immunity: 'On' or 'Off' ?
Multicast Data: 'On' or 'Off' ?
Multicast Rate, Mbps: '1-54' ?
Would setting it to G only make any difference?
And is WDS better then just AP?
So setting it to 24Mbps would be best as the TX is still 26dbi and the RX is in my signal range?
I have bben thinking?
I saw on the Data sheet that it onlt has spped up to 25mbps.
And seeem as though i want to add 2 or three users do you think it would be better to get a mikrotik MT-RB433 with 1*MT-R52 Card?
Would this handel more clients better? could each ns2 client then potentially run at 25mbps?
I have also been having problems with changing settings on my ns2 from the wireless side? Sometimes i click apply and it works and others it just dies, i cant acces ns2 by its ip and i cant just reboot the power i have to rreset to defaults? is this normal?

I am puzzled with the idea that -73-79 is a not a decent signal. For a > 1 mile link with foliage and no telling what other signal interference, I'll take that any day.
The CCQ is (from the wiki): "This is an index of which evaluates the wireless Client Connection Quality. It takes into account transmit errors, latency, and throughput while evaluating the ratio of successfully transmitted packets against the re-transmitted ones and taking into account current rate ratio against the highest specified rate. The level is based on a percentage value where 100% corresponds to a perfect link state."
I would highly suggest thoroughly reading the entire WIKI. It clarified a LOT!
I personally set...
Noise Immunity = On
Multicast = Off
And unless you are setting up repeaters, stay away from WDS. I have repeaters and I actually prefer to brute-force it with multiple radios.
IMHO...

If you're getting as low as -79 dBm at one end, that's only 5 dB over the receiver threshold to recover a signal at 54 Mbps. That's not leaving you much margin for fade and interference. Try dropping the data speed down to the point where you CCQ is stable.

Thanks,
Well i thought that -75ish was not bad for no LOS and trees etc.
Just i would never think that it copies at (27KB/s) thats crap, dialup internet is faster than that?
Whats the Wiki?
Is it posible for a link to the Wiki?
And how do you work out the CCQ?
I am thinking that i just need to put a 26dbi directional grid on my client side?
Would that make a reasonable difference?

Sorry, WHT is right (again). Lost the fact of what you are going. I "cap" my setups at 11mb in b only and at -79 and a nf of -97, I get CCQ of >95%...
Remember, the CCQ (on the main) is representative of transmit only... right WHT?
Sig
Right you are, shapiros! You get avacoado green kitchen refigerator and maching oven hot mittens.
While not at all definitive (it does not tell you *why* the connection is crappy), CCQ is perhaps the best way to judge the overall quality of the connection.

Personally, I would use 2 Poynting 26dbi grid antennas and 2 Bullet2HP's. Would have cost you less in the end as well. With a point-to-point link, the EIRP is much higher...

i tried earlier today and i dropped my sppeds to 24mbps on both ends as thats the best TX vs RX on the data sheet.
And instead of 27kbps i got 6kbps copy speed?
?????
How or where do i work out the CCQ
I was just looking at that bullet:
acording to the data sheet below:
the ns2 is more powerfull?
Bullet:
http://www.miro.co.za/upload/Wireless/UB-BULLET2_Datasheet.pdf
ns2:
http://www.miro.co.za/upload/Wireless/UB-NS2-datasheet.pdf
Its on the Main web GUI tab screen.
Zapnologica...
I'd default the units and get back to a known working starting point. No telling what you may have toggled somewhere.

Ok i will do,
I ahve a problem with both my ns2 is that when i change settings fromt eh wireless sides, SOMETIMES it bombs, i can pull the power out or what ever, i have to use the lan wire and reset it to defauts before it works again? Is this correct? are you just not meant to change settings from the Wireless side?
No, use the wired etherent connection.

The NS2 is more powerful than the B2. But, I said Bullet2HP. It is 800mw. Twice that of the NS2.
WHT is right, you got something bad "out of kilter".
- default
- give the first (yours) an SSID, leave everything else alone (I think the default is AP)
- set your friends to IP 192.168.1.21 in station mode
-- on the "Link" tab, select your AP SSID
What do you get?

Hello,
What are you using to measure the throghput of the link?
Thanks,

I will do, And will let you know? (do you want to know the signal or the CCQ)
I have reset the thing to defaults plently of times.
Does encryption made any difference to speed?
Where can i find the Wiki?

I have been playing around abit.
I have managed to get up to 650KBps actual copy speed.
And i find thats fastest on 54 by quiet allot.
the CCQ changes the whole time from 13% to 40%
But i have achieved my wanted speed.
My onnly thought is, i have a sector on the ap, if i connect annother station will this then halve my speed with the current station that i have.
