View Full Version : Can I use dual Omni's on a RocketM5

I'm looking at setting up a base station with a rocket M5, problem is I only need one rocket but i need 360 degrees of coverage.( I don't want three rockets and 3 120 degree antennas.) Can I use two Omni antennas to get proper 2x2 mimo coverage? The subscriber units(9 of them) will be Nano5M's.

and if I can use Omni's I was looking at a pair of 8dbi antennas do they need to be a set distance apart or any other concerns?

Thanks
Derek

Hey Derek,

I have not tested with two Omni's personally. I believe you would need to have on vert one horizontal and have the proper wavelength spacing between them to keep isolation on the h/v pol's.

Can we submit this to engineering? This should be a known fact whether the RocketM5 design can support antenna setups other than the 4 Ubiquity specific products, and if it can what are the requirements for those setups.

Thanks
Derek

Hello Derek,

This is something you guys are free to test. We desinged Rocket to be used with sector antenna and not omni's.

Thanks,

Mike

I have done extensive simulation on this now. You really need 1 Horz. and 1 Vert omni for isolation. Spacing is best done verticaly and as far as possible. When I install this config in about a months time, I am going to mount it all to a 20' pole and space things 10' apart with the vertical omni on top.

As far as how will it work... no idea, I hope it achieves better throughput and link stability through tree's. At very least if it works it will dramatically reduce wind loading per client on a tower as it will replace 4 sectors with xr2's.

Thanks for the info.
