View Full Version : Lan connectivity issue with Nanostations

I've had a consistent issue with lan connectivity on nanostations on longer cat 5 runs(40-50 feet or so). It happens on maybe 10% of the nanostations I have purchased and it happens right out of the box. The power led lights up but there is no communication on the lan port. Swapping out the nanostation has always fixed the issue. If I hook the faulty nanostation to a short cat5 cable run to the poe that it usually works.
It's happened on my latest shipment of nanostation that I received yesterday and it has happened on prior shipments.

I was kind of hoping one of the UBNT guys could chime in here. I just had this issue again this evening. Two out of the last six nanostations I have attempted to install have had this issue. Swapping it out with another unit always remedies it. I'm just wondering what would be different between 2 units, that would cause one to work just fine and the next to have this issue?

Hello,
Have you tried a higher voltage PoE?
Thanks,
Mike

I'll be sure to try that next time, but I didn't think it could be a power issue since the power led on the units always light up. It just won't communicate over the lan.

Hello,
The power light will come on regardless of the voltage plugged in.
Thanks,
Mike

Well, I tried the ubiquiti 24v power supply and it didn't remedy the situation. This is quite frustrating, what could be different from one unit to the next?

Please open NS2's and compare circuit board, and post photos.

Mike I have similar problem, if I power off nanostation 2 or BULLET2, BULLET2H in t seconds and power on in t' second with t + 1< t' < t + 2 seconds NS2, BULLET2, BULLET2H freeze (only LAN light, no watchdog, no wlan light and signal).
Also if I pull out quickly LAN POE cable and insert it again ( < 1 second ) also freeze.
any solution????
Mike, Nanostation M series will have this issue??
I think it is a serious bad desing hardware.

wait longer before plugging it back in

Back to my original question. Anyone have any ideas on what could be going on?
I absolutely love the ubiquiti products, I just wish I could figure out this one nuisance I am having.
Thanks

Hello,
Are you always plugging them into the same device on the long cable runs?
Thanks,
Mike

I had same problem. Experimented with various configurations (changing cable, poe injector, cable length, power supply)
If I use a traditional regulated battery charger power supply that has a very smooth dc voltage, with voltage regulated @ 14.4vdc - NanoStation has been 100% stable.
I found switch mode transformers to give off electronic "noise". Be sure the current rating is 1.5amps and that the regulated transformer has got a nice big smoothing capacitor inside.
This has solved my ongoing problem 100% so I hope this helps others.
Any electronic / security store should sell the 12v 1.5a regulated units. The simplist way to tell if the unit is a switch mode is if the unit is very light. Switch modes dont have a traditional copper wire wound transformer, and are thus much lighter, but do give of noise.
Stay away from Switch Mode to drive sensitive electronic units.
Use tratidional copper wire wound transformer with regulator, rectifier and smoothing caps.

I gave this some thought and the chances are that they are always being plugged into the same device, which would be my laptop since I normally do all the configuration with my laptop.
I had the issue happen again yesterday so I connected a different computer to the nanostation and it started communicating. :) Hallelujah!!
Just curious what could be going on and why it would only happen occasionally?

So the power supply included with the nanostations is a swith mode power supply?

It happened again today and changing computers did not fix the issue. I had to swap out the nanostation.

Hello,
Please visit http://www.ubnt.com/support to RMA the units so I can take a look at it here.
Thanks,
Mike
