View Full Version : SyncMesh Client vs AirMax
SyncMesh is WiMAX like TDMA? Anyone can comment on this?
AirMax is a combination of several things, so its hard to answer a direct comparison.
Edited and added...Keep in mind, the SkyPilot firmware was for the lessor horsepower Bullet. If all the AirMax features could have been run on a standard Bullet, you can be sure UBNT would have tried that.
Rory is a SkyPilot dealer, he could give you more insight.

SyncMesh is definitively not WiMAX, as AirMax is neither.
And SyncMesh runs on "top of the shelf silicon" Their words, not mine.
AirMax is a solution with combination of hardware and software. What is the hardware related solution of AirMax?

top of the shelf Atheros SoC.

I have my doubts.
Ron...
You may very well be correct, that occurred to me also.
But considering they did it with a much less horsepower capable radio and resell the radio at a much higher price than the Bullet M, I don't think their product has any advantages now.
Anyone has conducted testing on SyncMesh?

Syncmesh is a far more mature firmware but it's a mesh firmware. The problem with it is it's much slower. Maximum bandwdith is limited by a Gateway which is 13.5Mbps TCP/IP. If they would license the firmware at the Gateway level so it ran on a Rocket or Bullet, holy cow. It would destroy Tropos, FireTide, Meraki, etc... Imagine mature mesh firmware on $100 hardware. Even if the cost of the Ubquiti radios doubled, it would still pretty much destroy everyone else cost wise.
SkyPilot was selling syncmesh for $99 but it was still limited by the Gateway performance and the cost of the Gateway.
Mesh firmware for SynMesh? Is this mean that it can support multihop environment? I don't think so. The limitation is because it only supports 802.11a which its maximum data rate is 54Mbps (half duplex).
According to my understanding, AirMAX is Point-to-Multipoint or Point-to-Point solution for 802.11n (40MHz - 300Mbps (half duplex)). Thus, it can provide better throughput.

Skypilot uses Gateway and Extender and indeed a 2nd generation of Mesh network. Sorry, I am wrong.
