Will UBNT open the specification for AirMAX to allow other vendors (eg Mikrotik) implement it? I really like the ubnt kit for CPE, but would like to be able to use mikrotik APs, due to the greater flexibility.
Thanks,
Andrew

<cough>

Right after cellphone companies drop the Early Termination Fees.

Right after TV cable companies lower their rates.

Right after Krylon Paint and Bondo drop Cher as their spokeswoman.

Right after Hillary "I can write my name in the snow" Clinton is President.

I think it may be in their interest to open it up. I realise that they've probably invested a fair amount of time and effort in developing it and aren't obligated to share but I'd imagine that there'd be a number of people (myself included) for whom the features that are currently implemented by Ubiquiti aren't enough on the AP end. I want my APs to be able to support such things as radius authentication, multiple SSIDs, vlan tagging - and in line with this, the ethernet port of the AP must be able to pass full 1500 byte frames plus vlan tags, which the Ubiquiti gear can't. The mikrotik API is a very useful feature too.

If the APs don't have all the features ISPs need to have a maintainable network then people won't buy their CPE units either.

Where most WiMAX vendors definitely have the upper hand over Ubiquiti's AirMAX is the element and network management tools that go with them.

Haha, Ubiquiti is pretty much near close to becoming the new mikrotik.

All Mikrotik has is some minipci card and a firewall/ router o/s

Ubiquiti has all but a router system.

I wait to the day Ubiquiti brings out such a system, f^&k mikrotik.

I'm of to a tea party!

The "router system" is a BIG deal.
At this point, AirOS GUI has 10% of the capabilities of RouterOS.

Hello,

This will never be a possibility.

Most of these features would be nice.. .but the big ones are the API and radius authentication.

If these feature were on the ap it would be helpful. I do use the multiple ssid's in a .11b/g enviro i do not see the use in a .11n/AirMax enviro.

as for vlan's just put a mt router ahead of the ap and an mt box behind the cpe to use vlan's.

Now I hope they just stick with it, and make it work well.

Well said... it would be great to see a fanastic AP with adaquate features from ubiquity and a high power router from mikrotik that focused on routing alone.

Amen. Couldn't agree more. If UBNT wants to build an HD router later, that would be fine to, but please don't try to combine it with a killer AP as your first release!!!!

I also wish MT would stop concentrating so much on wireless, it's not their domain (Granted they do it well) and it takes away from the quality of their core product (being a router). Just look at the last 5 or 6 firmware updates of MT that have been a complete **** for each and every one.

Oh, come on, that's not fair. MT based APs and CPEs work no less well than UBNT APs and CPEs.

However, UBNT products have easier installation and lower cost while MK products have more features and less burnt out ethernet ports.

Currently, we use UBNT for CPEs and some PtP links and MK for APs because multiple SSIDs and VLANs are a must.
