I've been digging though the AirOS V firmware and it seems to be OpenWRT based, specifically version 8.09.1, this is wonderful news as it means that there are now tons of ready-made packages for things like ospf support.
See the openwrt download page for a list of packages:
http://kamikaze.openwrt.org/8.09.1/ar71xx/packages/
The kernel doesn't appear to be the one from openwrt and the boot process is wildly different.
There isn't any trace of the jffs overlay trick that openwrt uses to allow a compressed flash backed read only filesystem to be updated, so installing packages will mean building a new firmware image and flashing as previously.
There is a watchdog binary, a watchdog device and the OpenWrt kernel has a watchdog driver called ar71xx_wdt.c, so with any luck there will be support for the hardware watchdog this time around, YAY!
