View Full Version : High ping times + many dropped sessions

I've got an odd situation developing at a customer site. The logical setup is two fixed LS2s running as stations, and one fixed LS2 running as an access point through a switch to a server. All are running the latest firmware level: XS2.ar2316.v3.4.4390.090521.1757.

The physical setup is
- both STATION LS2s have clear LOS and are about 100 meters from the AP
- both STATION LS2s have a 4dbi flat patch antenna
- the AP LS2 has a 14dbi flat patch antenna
- the angle between the AP and the two receivers is right at 60 degrees.

It is a very noisy environment, next to a residential area, with light industrial, so there are a lot of unmanaged wireless networks that show up in the site survey.

I have selected channel 11 for this configuration, as it seems the most lightly used in the environments.

RSSIs for both stations are -45 to -48dbm.

There is no security at this time, but I want to change that when we figure out the cause of the problems we're having. Those are:

a) very long ping times to the stations from the server: these range anywhere from 150ms to 1500ms.
b) lots of dropped connections and lost data from long-lived sessions with high throughput requirements.

I've been reading this paper linked in another thread:
http://www.ubnt.com/downloads/ubi_mtik_power.pdf

Based on that, I'm guessing, and it's purely a guess, that I need to lower my power output in all of the LS2s to something like 18-20dbm to achieve the required throughput. The frustrating thing is that I've got the data rate set to AUTO, which I understand is supposed to lower the output power automagically based on link conditions.

I'm also pondering an antenna swap at the AP to achieve a larger coverage profile, but I really don't think that's it, given the RSSIs at the stations. But I could be wrong, as usual.

I'm going to try the power reduction tomorrow on Monday and see if it improves the conditions. But I'd really love to hear any other ideas that might help, because I'm not going to get paid until this works to their satisfaction.

Configuration files, if needed - I've cleansed it of customer data before copying it into here:

On the off-chance that someone is reading this or stumbles across it:

1) I tried the lower XMIT power, and it drastically increased the dropouts. So we went back to the full 26, or whatever the default ends up being with the driver. To me it looks like 16 in the downloaded configs.

2) The customer switched the units to use Channel 6, and the dropouts disappeared for a while (see #3). Even though there are 3 other APs in the site survey using Channel 6. So, it would be helpful to know how busy a particular channel is at a location, and that will require an investment in a spectrum analyzer. Guess which one I'll be buying.

3) Those APs in channel 6 started getting busy around 6pm and generating interference. From the looks of them (default AP names), they're probably consumer units and the owners got home from work and started doing their internet thing. I also bet that the industrial unit on Channel 11 went quiet around 5pm.

A simple solution would be a "channel schedule." I might see if I can hack something together with a script.

OK, then.

I would like to recommend to test your wireless link using all available channels (not only 11 and 6). Possible, that in other channel you will find many AP, but without high traffic and interference. Next step would be configure channel shifting and 5/10MHz channel width.

Also please try to enable/disable Noise Immunity option.

Edmundas,

What would be the advantage of Channel Shifting? From reading the wiki, it looks like that only makes the Ubnt nodes invisible to non-Ubnt wireless nodes.

I'll check the Noise Immunity settings next time I'm at the customer location.

Thanks,
Scott

Yes, using channel shifting and 5/10 mhz width means that non-ubiquity radios will not be able to communicate with your radios. So you will prevent your radios from unwanted association requests and other traffic.
