Phase 2 -- Pair of Pico2HPs - signal ~ -45, CCQ 1% -- huh?

Hi Everyone,
I've built and managed a Moto Canopy network for years now, but I now have my hands on my first bit of Ubiquiti hardware and hitting a snag.

I have a pair of Pico2HP radios, using the antennas from the factory. One is mounted on a mast about 6 feet above the sheet metal roof of the "primary building" where I am trying to deploy them. The other is mounted to my vehicle, and I'm parking at various points trying to determine the best spot to mount the second.

The location I have done all my testing is ~200 feet away from the other AP, with clear line of sight. This is in an RV park though, so plenty of RVs around to send the signal bouncing.

The original plan was to set them up both as WDS APs, together they would serve the whole park. The close people would use their laptops directly, the further people would get a NS2L in the window.

So, from the "testing location" the each AP saw the other with a receive signal of about -40dB, and noise floor is -96dB. However, the Transmit CCQ was between 0% and 2%; and the APs negotiated a speed of 1mbps in both directions.

Reading similar threads here gave me many ideas. I have tried:
- disabling AP WDS; instead, one unit as AP, and one unit as Station
- using both 802.11b only and g only
- disabling the auto adjustment on the ACK timeout, and setting it to 21.
- disabling "extra reporting"
- using firmware versions 3.4 and 3.3
- turning the transmit power down on each radio (each AP saw the other at -50dB)

Each change made little difference. The notable exception being disabling the auto adjustment on the ACK timeout. After doing that, the units would negotiate higher speeds and better CCQ when the link was idle. As soon as I started an ICMP stream though, it would go right back to 1mbps/1mbps with 1% CCQ and I would drop over half my pings.

So, is there any advice that the seasoned veterans could give me? What am I missing? Where do I go from here?

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Setting the ACK TTL to 100 made all the difference in the world. Now they are linked at 54/54 with 99% CCQ and working beautifully.

If you would do me additional favor, could you give me a bit of an explanation as to why this worked?

My assumption is that all the sheet metal in the trailer park is creating a ton of multi-path. And that somehow, increasing the ACK TTL fights that. Am I even close?

I certainly agree with you that using as tight a beam width as possible will cut down headaches when in a "crowded" RF environment. However, I'm about as rural as it gets here in Michigan. There are likely a handful of 2.4 phones on site, but I don't think it'll be too big a deal.

And as a side note: I'll soon be double checking with an AireView that I just ordered (whooo hoooooo!!!)

Well, I'm past the hurdle from above. But another has cropped up.

Based on Mike's advice, I've got the two APs talking well in AP-WDS mode. Signal bounces a bit (36mbps - 54mbps) but that is acceptable. I found the most puzzling thing though:

When my laptop is physically connected to to AP2 - the remote AP - everything works like a charm. I can ping everything up the line. The Internet is nice and snappy. Wonderful.

When I disconnect the Ethernet cable from my laptop and associate to AP2, I can still access AP2 (both HTTP and ICMP), but I lose about 90% of my ping packets to AP1 - the "master" AP - and anything else upstream of AP1. And the web interface of AP1 is (expectedly) unusable.

To me this is contradictory. When the laptop is connected wirelessly, I can only communicate with the AP I am associated with. This tells me that the problem is comm between AP2 and AP1. But, when I connect the laptop via Ethernet to AP2 everything is just fine. To me, this rules out communication between AP2 and AP1... huh??!?

I originally thought that could be over powering the receiver on the cheep PCMCIA wireless card, so I tried turning down both APs to 20dbm output power. The signal strength of the WDS connection dropped appropriately (~ -74 now), but it did not make any difference towards the problem.

When I unplug the remote AP, I do pickup a faint signal from the "master AP." Could it be the "hidden node" problem? How could I test for that?
