Well, it is almost 6PM PST and still no announcement. I'm wondering if there will be any announcement at all.

So much for announcing the finalists. Unless we hear something today I'm going to assume the contest is canceled.

not a lot of point to having 'deadlines' if they are ignored
Whoaaaa, Trigger....
Give UBNT at least a day to get the results posted.
On the other hand, $200,000 is a lot of money. What if the contest entries don't meet what UBNT was hoping for? Anyone could bang out some generic coding and one of the codes might be a tad better than the others, thus qualifying as the best entry, but still not what UBNT was hoping to see.
I'd have to look again at the requirements to see how specific or liberal they are.
On a side note, it would be nice if the flagship product, the Bullet, had more RAM to load some more powerful firmware. Hmmm...I suppose you could do it with the Picostation.

It only takes a moment to post something to the forum along the lines of, "We're still judging entries, results will be posted soon."
...or:
"We had so few entries we're currently debating amongst ourselves whether or not to cancel the contest and just pay that Riskable guy to finish writing PyCI" :D
It only takes a moment to post something to the forum along the lines of, "We're still judging entries, results will be posted soon." That and 5,000 other things in line. Trust me, Mike has a very full plate.

Full Plate ?
Try being self-employed.

The Competition is now screwed as far as i'm concerned, and i'm glad i left my own copyrights in place for the initial submission.
It was pretty sketchy, but the ideas were in there.
If they really want to, they could write/commission/employ someone to do a UI for about the same cash, probably less.
The RS has too many problems for me as a hardware platform really (like only having 2 ethernet, not 3) , and so i'm out.
I'm not wasting any more of my time to do anything on a project that imposes deadlines, yet ignores them. Worse still - ignores the people that it hopes can do a new UI for them. Maybe they'll ignore the 'i accept my prize money' emails too.
It is a real shame, as the RS could have been a really useful (and for them profitable) product.
I'm going back to the ALIX and Mikrotiks, and am not going to chase this rainbow anymore.
Full Plate = Wife and kids
Self-employed = Mutually exclusive of wife and kids

Self-employed essentially means being really quite busy.
Then again, my wife and the two kids seem happy.
(natch: they're a lot happier when the 'busy' means some money happens)

if you decide to stay in, then i can help out on the low-level stuff if you need it.

Dunt matter to me anymore.
I'm out of it.
Stupid fantasy on my part really.

An old adage, but still true today.

Well there was something fishy about this whole thing from the beginning. They don't take this whole thing seriously enough... I mean, they didn't do much advertising for this challenge, it was only when Roundsparrow posted it up on slashdot, that people actually started to know about it... And then the late responses on the forum, now this...
I can understand that Mike can't deal with it, but hey, he can't be the whole company, I bet they could've find someone to deal with the public relations, if they wanted to...
If they really want to, they could write/commission/employ someone to do a UI for about the same cash, probably less.
I think it's pretty much the other way around, while 160k sounds nice, when you split it up to months and the number of people on the team, it's not THAT much, no sane development company would agree to this price. On the other hand, a contest has the benefit of having no negotiations, and ubnt can kick out anyone they like... So it's almost the perfect way for ubnt to do this, all they would have to do is communicate with the people...
Anyway, I'm just stating my opinion, I'm not in the contest, it did cross my mind, but my current job is taking up every second of my life (self-employement is a b***h), so I shouldn't care, but for some reason I do...

Months ? Team ?
3 months 1 guy (full time), maybe some graphic design cost !
True, no dev company would want it at that price, cos they do have the manpower costs.
A guy in India, Poland or one of many others would do it on-budget no probs.
I entered cos i was a bit vain, and it interested me. I'm self-employed too, so i had to do a reality-check when they did not (as a team !) manage to post even a message saying they were going to be late.
Which is why i'm out.
If they make Me stick to the rules or i'm out, it must work the other way round. I think that they have disqualified themselves from my participation.
Then again, i'm now free to re-do DD-WRT as it should have been.
I.E. mainly Free, but costs for the bits that you clearly need to make money - like hotspots with payment provider interface + back-end etc.
Not limited to RS either - everything that OpenWRT supports, which is a lot.

Guys --
Sorry for the delay. We are still reviewing the entries. We'll have an announcement before the end of the week.
Stay tuned...

I don't see why there would be more than 15 contestans, so just pass'em through before they all just get sick of the corporate bs and you'll be left with no finalized product...
adrianatkins
07-01-2009, 01:36 PM
Too late Robert.
You've broken your own rules, so what hope would any prospective Finalist have ?
Any chance of Fair ? A resounding 'No'.
You set the timescales, and failed to meet them yourselves, but you require us to do so.
Unfair, unworkable, untrustworthy.

You UBNT guys need to have a serious think for 10 mins, then get back here with a solution, cos otherwise you're all gonna look very stupid.
I care not. I can buy boards from everywhere.
It would be a CRYING SHAME to see the RS go down in flames cos you can't agree or communicate.

Hello,
To be fair to every sumbission for the contest, we have been giving each one enough time to make a valid decision as to who will be a finalist. This has taken longer then expected, but must be done to insure fair judging of every sumbission. The decision has been extended until Friday to make sure we have the best possible group of candidates.
Thanks,
Mike

Weak.
Ok.
My submission (which you have hopefully deleted by now) needs loads of work.
The deadline has passed.
It needs a lot more work, so must you stop reviewing until i get time to make it better ?
Does my submission still qualify ?
Nah.
The Challenge is a hoax.
You are imposing deadlines on the Contestants, but not on yourselves.
Your argument does not wash.

On the bright side - you have one less entry to review !

Mike, these kinds of announcements should be done BEFORE the deadline in question, not after the contestants got all mad. You might not realise this, but tiny things like that can alter the end result by soooo much... All the bonus stuff that the contestans thought that it would be cool to include, just gone poof, all they are saying is that ubnt doesn't deserve that kind of extra work...

brreaker hit the nail on the head.
NO contestant will have any faith now, just because the deadlile was missed - UBNT's self-imposed deadline.
All the juicy code sure as sh*t went *poof* at midnight June 20th.
If i spent until their next 'deadline' doing coding, and actually won (dunno if that would be announced) would i even get paid ?
I dunno. It is a matter of faith i suspect.
That faith is now missing.

Hello,
While I agree that the announcment should have been made, there is no amount of complaining that will change it. The finalists are bieng reviewed and will be anounced once EVERY entry has been giving enough time to be judged acurrately. This anouncement will made Friday and we will move forward from there. This contest is not a hoax by anymeans and we have very qualified entrants that we have gone over already.
For the contestents who are still in it we appreciate the sumbissions that were recieved and are working diligently to get the results out in the timely AND fair manner.
Thanks,
Mike

And of course one doesn't announce such thing on page 2 of a topic that was started by a user. You do that on the site and on the forum as a separate sticky thread...
no amount of complaining that will change it.
The problem is that this isn't complaining: I'm not in the contest! I gave you an advice, that you guys seem to be in need of...

Hello,
I do apologize for me not bieng in charge of the contest, I am just relaying the information at hand. I was just responding in kind to the people who were stating/asking questions in regards to this topic. The issue is now closed as the announcment will be made friday.
Thanks,
