I am in need of a cost-effective, reliable and compact UPS to use at our tower locations. The battery life only needs to be a couple minutes - just enough to withstand power flickers and short-term power outages. Any recommendations?
We use a lot of the $49 APS ones that you can pick up from Walmart.

Picked a few up from Wal-Mart - we'll see how they work. Thanks WHT

do you mean APC? if so, they're cheap and cost effective, but they're not very good.
they will withstand some spikes but there's still a 40ms switchover time during which you're exposed to the raw jolt of the mains. its inverter's output is also a "sine-wave approximation" which is fancy wording for an ugly square wave. i put one on a scope meter at some point and it scared me :)
we actually blow hardware pretty often with them (that's what we install as well) and on our really problematic sites we use these : http://www.falconups.com/ssg-series-500.htm
they're not cheap though, at around 1000$ per. we're still looking for a decent and cheap(er) UPS that we could use everywhere.
use this UPS, easy to made, small and is "online"

Picked up a few of the cheap APC units from Wal-Mart and they did the trick. We had a big storm roll through last week and the power went out multiple times and my equipment remained up the whole time :)
